MOGADISHU – Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the Somali President’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs and Drought, at his residence in Beirut, ahead of the Arab consultative ministerial meeting in the Lebanese capital Saturday.
A spokesman for Secretary-General Jamal Rushdie stated that the presidential envoy handed Aboul Gheit a message from the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, addressing the severe risks of the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa region, of which Somalia is one of the most affected countries, where famine threatens more than 7 Millions of people, as a result of the lack of rainfall during three consecutive seasons, which caused large waves of internal displacement.
The spokesman conveyed the Secretary-General’s affirmation during the meeting that the League attaches great importance to drought issues in the Horn of Africa, thanking the Somali president for his confidence in the Arab League, and pledging to make every possible effort to alert the Arab and international public opinion to the difficult suffering that the people of Somalia are experiencing as a result of climate changes. in the Horn region.
Aboul Gheit made an appeal a few days ago, in which he appealed to the international community and donors to pay attention to the serious tragedy that the people of Somalia are suffering from. The Secretary-General of the Arab League pledged to continue to mobilize support for this important issue, whether at the Arab or international levels.
