MOGADISHU [SMN] – At least one soldier from the national intelligence and security agency [NISA] was killed in a shootout at a main checkpoint leading to Mogadishu airport.
The security detail of a former military commander, now serving as a Federal lawmaker Yusuf Kabale opened fire at intelligence officers around the Madina Gate after an argument.
A NISA official who spoke to Shabelle Media Network by phone confirmed that the brief exchange of gunfire left an intelligence service member identified as Captain Ulug Arabey.
The official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the officer attempted to halt the military escorting bullet-proof vehicle of the MP at the checkpoint before the fire.
There was no immediate statement from the security ministry regarding the incident.
The situation at the checkpoint remains calm in the afternoon hours after the gunfight.
A decree has been issued previously by the court of the armed forces that prohibit armed personnel from entering Madina Gate at the Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.
