BAIDOA (SMN) – The ministry of information for Southwest State issued a statement, announcing heavy fighting between regional troops and Al-Shabaab near Baidoa city.
The statement confirmed at least 10 Al-Shabaab militants have been killed after Southwest State forces backed by SNA repulsed an attack against their base in the Goofgaduud area.
Several fighting vehicles were burned down during the battle, which took several hours with both sides using heavy and small weapons, according to independent sources.
The situation returned to normal following pushback of Al-Shabaab attackers from the village which is key to the security of Baidoa, the interim seat of the Southwest State of Somalia.
Southwest state is preparing an offensive against Al-Shabaab after president Hassan Sheikh said last week that the second phase of the anti-al-Shabaab push will stary in the region soon.
Al-Shabaab remains in control of key areas in Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions, which are all under Southwest State and bordering Somali capital, Mogadishu.
