MOGADISHU [SMN] – IGAD has praised the president of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelle, for his efforts to mediate the unrest in Lasanood, the capital of the northern Sool region.

The Secretary General of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, said that the Lasanad crisis has posed a concern and that a peaceful solution needs to be given special attention.

“We are worried about the Lasanod crisis, given the loss of life, the situation in Somaliland needs special attention and an urgent peace agreement,” Gebeyehu said.

The Secretary also praised the efforts of the President of Djibouti to mediate the situation and said that the IGAD encourages Guelleh to continue meditating between the sides.

“Now IGAD praises the mediation efforts made so far by the president of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, and encourages him to continue mediation,” Gebeyehu said.

A few weeks ago in Lasanod, there was tension between the Somaliland forces and the people who were angry about the killings in the city that led to tribal militias taking over from the breakaway state.

There has been a meeting of the clan leaders of the Sool region which is discussing the political fate of the people and a state formation.

The Mayor of Lasanod city has confirmed the removal of the armed forces from the city and added that one of the region’s most influential leaders Garaad Jama Garad Ismail is in the city and is working with others including business owners to stop further disturbances.
