LASANOD [SMN] – The internet access in the northern town of Lasanod, Sool regional capital was disrupted on Sunday as hundreds of people protested against Somaliland for the 7th consecutive day.
Protesters clashed with police and at least one person was killed and several wounded Today. The rally was the latest in a bloody series of demonstrations since last month.
A resident reported that UK-trained Somaliland special force members stormed the HQs of the internet and mobile operators in Lasanod and ordered the staff to suspend the services.
The shutdown limits online and phone access to information about the violence that is now turning into turmoil amid mounting calls from Somali leaders to de-escalate.
Lasanod residents took to the streets last week in protest against a surge in the targeted assassinations in the city which has been the flashpoint of the war between Somaliland and Puntland.
The city fell to Somaliland in 2007 after Puntland troops were overpowered in the battle for control. Sool and Sanaag regions are contested areas that are prone to conflict.
