Kenya’s defense minister visits Jubaland state of Somalia

KISMAYO [SMN] – Kenyan Defense Minister Aden Bare Duale arrived in Kismayo today, where he met Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe, his first trip since he was appointed in September.

The meeting centered on border security and the fight against Al-Shabaab, according to the sources privy to the meeting between Duale and Madobe.

Kenya has a large number of combat troops in Jubaland, who are part of the AU mission in Somalia. Duale is heading to the Kenyan military bases in the region for a Christmas visit.

Jubaland serves as a buffer zone where KDF troops are protecting Al-Shabaab from attacks in Kenya. Since sending the soldiers in 2011, Kenya faced deadly raids, including Westgate.
