MOGADISHU [SMN] – Puntland state president Said Abdullahi Deni is doing his best to ensure the ongoing key talks of the National Consultative Council [NCC] to end in failure, Shabelle Media Network has learned.

Sources privy to the NCC meeting revealed that Deni with the support of his Jubaland counterpart Ahmed Madobe pushes for a plan to transfer the national security responsibility from president Farmajo with an aim to cause a deadlock that finally leads the conference to a total collapse.

The country’s constitution stipulates that the president is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and in charge of national security. Deni’s aim is to use this issue as a tool to destroy the conference.

Puntland has been holding separate meetings on the sidelines of the NCC forum with opposition figures and former army commanders hailing from Mogadishu to mobilize rebellious forces to stage war in the capital. Deni believes that the conflict is the only way that can prevent Farmajo from his re-election bid.

Deni, according to the sources is taking advantage of Mogadishu politicians with rigid and ungenerous perspectives on the situation to lead the revolt against Farmajo who is currently at odds with PM Roble.

For the past three days, the Puntland leader has been holding nightly meetings with leaders of the other regional states to try to convince them to agree with his mission to remove Farmajo from the army control.

Most of the leaders except Madobe have rejected his unconstitutional proposal. Deni’s plan was to put the issue on the negotiating table and this sparked a mess among the NCC leaders at the lengthy talks.

The sources added that the international community warned Deni against becoming an obstacle to the meeting aimed at correcting reported election irregularities which if fails he will solely shoulder the responsibility.
