President Hassan Sheikh meets troops returned from Eritrea

MOGADISHU [SMN] – For the first time, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in the country with troops trained in Eritrea as the army makes historic achievements in the war.

 

The president visited the troops twice last year before they started returning to Mogadishu and he now asked leading officers to prepare for operations against Al-Shabaab.

The main streets of the capital, especially those around the presidential palace and General Gordan were closed on Sunday as the president toured the newly trained soldiers.

The president told the troops that he and the people of Somalia are happy to see them back home and now readied to sacrifice for the liberation of the country from Al-Shabaab.

In his address, Hassan Sheikh asked the soldiers to get ready for joining the frontlines of the war against Al-Shabaab which is planned to be finished before the end of this year.

As many as five thousand soldiers, including air force members and commandos, received three-year training in Eritrea. President Hassan Sheikh brought them back home.

On Saturday, in his new year’s speech, Mohamud said Al-Shabaab will be over in the coming months and the AU troops will exit after 15 years of UN-mandated mission.
