MOGADISHU – Somalia on Sunday marked the 61st Anniversary of Independence Day in the country and overseas with a new government in place, SONNA reported.
President Hassan Sh. Mohamud congratulated the Somali people, wherever they are, on the 62nd anniversary of Independence day on June 26, 2020, urging them to be united to stand for the country facing the impacts of the droughts and difficult livelihoods.
The President did not appear at public events to mark the Independence Day because of the quarantine for the Covid-19 pandemic as he was tested positive two days ago.
Speaker of the Parliament, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur ‘Madobe’, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, former Prime Minister, Mohamed Hussein Roble, and Presidents of regional states shared congratulations on the Independence to the public.
Somalia is now in the week of Independence because northern regions of Somalia(Somaliland) gained independence from the British colony on June 26, 1960, while southern regions got independence on July 1st the same year and joined together then built the Republic of Somalia.
