BAIDOA (SMN) – The president of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is scheduled to travel to Baidoa city, which will mark his second visit since assuming office in June 2022.

Sources close to Villa Somalia revealed to Shabelle Radio that the president’s travel is based on the opening of a long-anticipated reconciliation conference in Southwest State.

The head of state will jet off from Mogadishu’s Aden Adde airport in the coming hours with an advance team, including his security detail already arrived in Baidoa, per the sources.

On Monday, the speaker of the Lower House Sheikh Aden Madobe reached the city which will host a reconciliation conference aimed to resolve the current political and electoral stalemate in Southwest state.

The city witnessed clashes last month after regional forces raided the residence of an opposition presidential candidate Mohamed Aden Farketi, who is in Mogadishu.

Hassan Sheikh visited Baidoa on May 15 shortly after his inauguration as the 10th president of Somalia. His 2nd trip comes as Lafta-Garen’s term extension sparked tension.
