Somalia, Saudi Arabia discuss livestock trade

RIYADH [SMN] – The Minister of Livestock of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hussein Mohamud Sheikh Hussein received an official invitation from the Minister of Environment, Agriculture, Livestock and Water of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli.

After the reception, the two ministers met to discuss how to strengthen relations between the two countries, especially the cooperation between the two ministries and how to officially lift the embargo on Somali livestock sold to Saudi Arabia, and reach a lasting solution.

On the other hand, experts from the two ministries held separate meetings which were important to officially lift the ban on Somali livestock exports. The Somali side was represented by a delegation led by the Director-General of the Ministry of Plant and Animal Husbandry Mohamed Omar Nur Veterinary Health and Prevention Abdirahman Nur Garish and Livestock Export and Marketing Advisor Ali Mohamed Galol.

Hussein Mohamud Sheikh Hussein, Somalia’s Minister of Livestock, Forestry and Pastoral Affairs, and his delegation held separate meetings with the head of the Kingdom’s Saudi Livestock and Agriculture Investment Agency (SALIC), Sulaiman AlRumaih, and the Deputy Governor of the Islamic Development Bank, Dr. Mansur Mukhtar met at the bank’s headquarters in Jeddah, and discussed the importance of supporting Somali pastoralists in their irrigation, water, pasture, treatment needs and encouraging the official lifting of the embargo on Somali livestock that will facilitate trade. Large and mutually beneficial, both in Somalia and in terms of economic growth, as livestock is one of the most important sources of economic growth and job creation.

Finally, the Minister and his delegation visited the Malik Abdulaziz Center for Original Arab Horses in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where they were warmly welcomed.
