Turkey will grant 30 million US dollars to Somalia as part of an agreement between the two countries.

The government will pay 2.5 million dollars per month, according to the agreement that was signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and published in the Official Gazette today (August 5).

Somalia will use the grant for financing its budget and improving its institutional capacity. It will periodically submit financial reports to Turkey.

According to the agreement, the use of the money will be supervised in accordance with Somalia’s financial rules, administrative regulations and practices.

Turkey previously granted a total of 84 billion dollars to Somalia as part of three different agreements that were signed in 2016, 2017 and 2019.

The latest move caused criticism on social media as Turkey’s lack of firefighting aircraft has surfaced during the wildfires that have been going on since July 28.

For 30 million dollars, the government could have bought six BE 200ES firefighting airplanes.
