US donated military equipment worth $9 million to the Somali armed forces

MOGADISHU [SMN] – The US has donated military equipment worth 9 million dollars including weapons, vehicles, medical supplies, and others for the Somali armed forces.

The handing over of the grant was attended by the US Ambassador Larry Andre, the Minister of Defense, and the commander of the SNA General Odowaa Yusuf Rage.

“We are happy with the success of the Somali security forces in the historic battle to liberate the Somali communities suffering from Al-Shabaab,” said Ambassador André.

“The offensive against Al-Shabaab is a Somali-led campaign. The United States reaffirms its commitment to support Somalia,” Andre added.

Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nor Jama thanked the United States for its continued support of the peace process in Somalia and support in the war against terrorism.

This support comes at a critical time for Somali forces as they regain control of large swathes of territory in the fight against al-Shabaab.

The donated weapons are both light and heavy and are meant to back Danab forces who are currently participating in the operations in Hirshabeelle and Galmudug states.

The arms were registered in accordance with the policy of the Federal Government of Somalia on the Management of Arms and Ammunition, according to the US embassy.
