US joins chorus of calls for de-esclation in Las’anod city

MOGADISHU [SMN] – The United States added its voice on Monday to growing calls for calm in Las’anod, Sool regional capital, where Somaliland forces clash with angry protesters for the 5th day in a row.

“On reports of violence in Laascaanood, we join Somali voices calling for calm. Peace & the rule of law must prevail over violence against civilians & destruction of property,” the US mission in Mogadishu tweeted.

The US urged all sides to refrain from actions that could add fuel to the fire and opt for dialogue to bring an end to violent protests that claimed the lives of at least 20 people.

Somali forces are being accused of using live bullets to disperse the protesters who are demanding the exit of the secessionist administration following a series of killings.

Las’anod is a disputed town that straddles the border between Puntland and Somaliland.

The city has been under Somaliland rule since it was seized from Puntland troops in 2007.
