LASAOD, Somalia — Authorities in Somalia’s SSC-Khaatumo state said Saturday that 22 young men have been arrested in connection with the brutal gang rape of two girls in LasAod, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage.
Local reports suggest the girls were attacked by a group of nearly 30 males in the Sool region’s capital. The case has prompted public anger across the country, where sexual violence is on the rise and prosecutions remain rare.
Speaking to local media, SSC-Khaatumo leader Abdikhadir Firdhiye said international investigators have been brought in from Mogadishu to probe the case thoroughly and ensure justice is served.
“We will not tolerate such heinous acts. If proven guilty, the perpetrators will face the full force of the law,” Firdhiye said, vowing tough punishment for anyone convicted.
The suspects are expected to appear in court in Laascaanood, with trials possibly beginning as early as this week. Officials say the proceedings could result in harsh sentences meant to deter future crimes.
Somalia has seen a disturbing surge in cases of rape and gender-based violence in recent years, with many survivors reporting little to no access to justice.
Rights groups have repeatedly called on Somali authorities to enforce tougher laws and strengthen protection for women and girls.
