GAROWE [SMN] – Puntland has held its first democratic local elections on Monday, the first of its kind since its inception in 1998.
The election took place in three districts of Ufeyn, Qardho, and Eyl, and was contested by eight political parties.
Nearly 40,000 eligible voters cast their votes in 54 polling stations with 499 candidates vying for 87 seats.
The election records the history and sets an example that the country can hold such an election the in coming years if the threat of Al-Shabaab is eliminated.
