MOGADISHU [SMN] – The National Intelligence and Security Agency [NISA] seized a container packed with military equipment bound for Al-Shabaab at the Mogadishu port.

The Minister of State of the Ministry of Internal Security, Mohamed Ali Hagaa, told the NISA officers managed to detect and intercept the container before being moved out of the port.

“Today, our Intelligence service was able to capture the second container, which contained items such as drones, bulletproof helmets, explosive devices, and other items,” said Hagaa.

This follows another seizure on Thursday both at the airport and seaport.

The government of Somalia is putting a lot of effort into the fight against the Al-Shabaab and has defeated the group in several regions within Galmudug and HirShabelle states.

Somali officials said the security forces arrested 10 suspects who attempted to illegally import high-caliber weapons and ammunition into the country without the knowledge and permission of the government.

The UN security council imposed a blanket arms embargo on Somalia shortly after the nation plunged into civil war in 1991 following the ouster of the military regime.
