UNITED NATIONS — President Csaba Korosi of the UN General Assembly condemned “in the strongest possible terms” Friday’s attacks against adjacent government and African Union (AU) military bases in Somalia, said his spokeswoman.
“He expresses his deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the people and governments of Uganda and Somalia,” said his spokeswoman Paulina Kubiak, referring to the countries of raid victims. “He also wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.”
Terrorism in all of its forms and manifestations constitutes a grave threat to international peace and security, she said, adding that Korosi underlined the need to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice.
The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) said in a statement that its reinforcements repelled al-Shabaab fighters, including suicide bombers, who had stormed its forward operating base in Bulo Marer, about 120 km southwest of Mogadishu, the capital.
There were no further immediate details on the raids of the government or ATMIS sites or any casualties.
The AU mission, mandated by a UN Security Council resolution, includes troops from Uganda.
