MOGADISHU [SMN] – The U.S. Africa Command said it has conducted an airstrike against Al-Shabaab militants in the vicinity of Bulo-Marer town, Lower Shabelle region.

The drone attack was carried out in response to the Al-Shabaab assault on ATMIS forward operating base, FOB Bulo Marer on Friday, where the Ugandan soldiers were stationed.

The AFRICOM added that the strike destroyed weapons and equipment taken by al-Shabaab fighters. The initial assessment suggests that no civilians were injured or killed.

U.S. military said it takes great measures to prevent civilian casualties. Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the operations to promote a more secure and stable Africa.

It is the second airstrike within a week. Five days ago, Moallim Osman is a veteran commander who has held several positions within al-Shabab, including the defense chief was wounded in a drone strike in Jilib town.

He was involved in planning the group’s January 2016 attack against an African Union military base manned by Kenyan forces in El Adde town within the Gedo region, Somalia.
