MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Somali government said Saturday more than 20 members of Al-Shabaab were killed in a premeditated operation in the Lower Shabelle region.

According to a government press statement, the operation in the Towfiq area was conducted in a collaboration with foreign forces thought to be American soldiers.

“More than 20 Alshabab members were killed in a well-planned operation that took place in the Towfiq area under the Kuntuwaray district of the Lower Shabelle region, which was carried out jointly by national forces and international friends,” the statement stated.

The Somali authorities further stated that the members slain were Al-Shabaab officers and fighters.

“In this targeted operation, Alshabab leaders and militias were killed in a house in that area,” the statement stated.

This attack comes after Al-Shabaab launched a heavy attack in the Qoryoley district in the Lower Shabelle region yesterday, resulting in a number of casualties.
