HARGEISA, Somalia – Another fire incident, on Sunday, occurred at a popular market in Tog Wajaale located in the breakaway region of Somaliland on Saturday night.

The fire was said to have destroyed properties worth millions of US dollars. The Firefighters of Somaliland and Rescue Service said that the blaze had been put under control.

The local authorities did not immediately confirm the cause of the fire or any casualties as of now. It is the second fire incident that was reported in Somaliland since last year.

Tog Wajaale lies near Ethiopia border.

In April 2022, a huge fire engulfed the Waheen Market and destroyed the majority of businesses and properties in the market. The officials estimate that between USD 1.5 billion to 2 billion worth of businesses and assets were destroyed by the fire disaster.

The massive fire swept through the sprawling Waheen market, engulfing hundreds of stores, stalls, and restaurants. Thousands of business owners have been left penniless.

Somaliland’s chamber of Commerce said the losses accounted for 40 to 50% of Hargeisa’s economy. The cause of the April 1 blaze – which raged for nearly 12 hours – is still under investigation.
