MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Army conducted a planned operation in the district of Eldheer in the Galgaduud region, the epicenter of the latest clashes with Al-Shabaab.

The army backed by local defense forces captured a leader belonging to the Al-Shabaab group and killed another during the Saturday military offensive in the remote areas.

The leader was named Abas Garobshe, while the other one who was killed in the operation was identified as Ilkacase. Al-Shabaab did not release a statement regarding the claims.

The Somali army also seized a vehicle, which was being used by Al-Shabaab members who were caught and killed in the assault.

The operation comes at the same time as the Galgaduud region is still facing relentless operations against the Al-Shabaab militants, who were driven out of key strongholds.

The Somali government said it captured nearly 100 villages from Al-Shabaab, mainly in HirShabelle and Galmudug states since the launch of the military offensive in 2022.
