KISMAYO, Somalia – The prime minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre has on Sunday touched down at Kismayo airport, taking off from the capital, Mogadishu, his office said.
The leader of Jubaland Ahmed Madobe, his deputy, members of Jubaland state parliament, and cabinet were spotted lined up in the airport for the reception of the prime minister.
In a statement, the office of the PM said, Barre would assess the humanitarian crisis in Jubaland that resulted from the flash floods and heavy rains pounding across the country.
It’s the first visit by the PM to Kismayo port city since he assumed office in June last year.
Last week, Barre visited Dolow town on the Somalia-Kenya border, which was ravaged by floods from the Juba River and rainfall to see with his own eyes the scale of the disaster.
According to the National Disaster Agency, 96 people lost their lives as extreme flooding pushed Somalia into a state of emergency, destroying homes and forcing thousands to flee.
Nearly two million people have been affected by heavy rains and flash flooding in several areas of Somalia since last month, according to the latest SoDMA flood crisis update.
