MOGADISHU, Somalia – A joint Somali and foreign forces’ operation targeted Al-Shabaab bases in southern Somalia amid an intensified air and group offensive against the militants.

The operation destroyed a court owned by the Al-Shabaab group in the village of Ugunji, where 7 leaders and other militants were killed, according to a statement by the military.

A press release from the Federal Government said that the leaders included Osame who was the leader of the group in the Ugunji area, and the deputy leader named Yahye.

“Other conspirators who were killed included Adnan, who was in charge of registering the individuals who were wanted for extortion money, and Horjooge Yahye, who was the deputy leader of the group in Ugunji area,” the press release from the government said.

This operation is part of the efforts to flush out the Al-Shabaab group from the remaining areas of the country after almost 17 years of insurgency and control of large swathes.
