ARUSHA, Tanzania – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Thursday, April 26, 2024, for an official state visit at the invitation of President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania.
The visit marks a significant moment in the bilateral relations between Somalia and Tanzania, emphasizing the strengthening of ties in various areas of mutual interest, including regional affairs and the integration of Somalia into the East African Community (EAC).
The visit was announced by Villa Somalia, the official residence of the President of Somalia, and comes at a crucial time as Somalia joined the EAC as its eighth Partner State in March 2024. During his visit, President Mohamud is expected to hold discussions with President Suluhu Hassan, focusing on deepening bilateral relations between the two countries and exploring new avenues for cooperation in trade, investment, and security.
This visit also provides an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the progress and challenges of Somalia’s integration into the EAC. The integration is expected to foster economic and social development in Somalia and the wider region by facilitating the free movement of goods, capital, and people.
The Somali President’s visit to Tanzania coincides with the 60th anniversary of the union between the former Republic of Tanganyika and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar, highlighting the historic ties between the two countries. Upon his arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport, President Mohamud was warmly welcomed by Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, John M. Makamba, and other officials.
