MOGADISHU, Somalia – In a fiery press conference held this morning in Mogadishu, former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed launched a scathing critique of the current federal government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Sharif accused the government of failing in its fundamental duties, including security, the fight against Al-Shabaab, military affairs, and the conduct of elections.
Sharif expressed his concern over the recent discovery of weapons in Abudwak, particularly in light of the recent lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia. “A lot of efforts have been put in to lift the sanctions, but it is unfortunate that there is an irresponsibility that the weapons are in the hands of the people, and the government is involved and its army is escorting illegal weapons,” he said.
The former president also addressed the country’s elections, accusing President Mohamud of opposing regional elections. “It has come to our attention that the President has said to the Heads of the administrations that the term has ended, do not participate in the election. A government that is working for its own interests will take us,” Sharif continued.
