MOGADISHU, Somalia — Over 90 members of Somalia’s Federal Parliament have initiated proceedings to remove Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi from his position. The motion, filed today, accuses Fiqi of various administrative failures and overstepping his authority, according to reports.

The parliamentarians have criticized Fiqi for what they describe as a unilateral approach in ministry operations, alleging he has sidelined deputy ministers and other senior officials without proper justification. This move comes amidst a backdrop of heightened political tension within Somalia, particularly concerning its international relations and internal governance practices.

Fiqi, known for his assertive stance on defending Somalia’s sovereignty, especially in light of the controversial memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland, has become a polarizing figure. His critics argue that his methods have not only stalled diplomatic efforts but have also potentially alienated allies at a crucial time.

The motion against Fiqi has sparked a debate on social media, with some users defending the minister, suggesting that the motion is politically motivated, possibly influenced by external pressures or internal political rivals. Others, however, support the MPs, arguing for accountability and better governance within the ministry.

If successful, this motion could lead to a significant reshuffle in Somalia’s cabinet, affecting the country’s foreign policy direction at a delicate moment in its regional diplomacy. The outcome of this parliamentary action remains to be seen, but it underscores the ongoing challenges within Somalia’s political landscape, where internal unity and effective governance are paramount for stability.
