MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is making waves on the international stage by participating in the Global Conference on Universal Access to Information in Accra, Ghana. Hosted by UNESCO and the Ghanaian government, this influential event kicked off on Tuesday, running for two days under the theme “Mainstreaming Access to Information and Participation in the Public Sector.”

NUSOJ Secretary-General Omar Faruk Osman is a key speaker at the conference, underscoring the union’s unwavering commitment to the freedom of information in Somalia. Osman is expected to illuminate the challenges and strides being made in media freedom and access to information within the country.
“The right to access information is essential for democracy and good governance,” Osman stated ahead of the event. “In Somalia, we are working tirelessly to align our national laws with international standards, ensuring that citizens can access the information they need to engage fully in public life.” His words echo the union’s mission to implement Article 32 of Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, which enshrines the right to freedom of expression and information.
