WAJID, Somalia — In a fierce nighttime engagement on the outskirts of Wajid district, in Somalia’s Bakool region, government forces successfully repelled an assault by Al-Shabaab militants, maintaining control over the contested area.

The conflict erupted after Al-Shabaab initiated the attack with artillery fire targeting the 60th Division base of the Somali army, leading to a direct confrontation.

Although the battle’s darkness and the ongoing nature of the operations obscure the full extent of casualties, Somali military officials confirmed they thwarted the militants’ advance, with the strategic sites remaining under government control.

Following the clash, the military presence in Wajid has been intensified, with troops conducting extensive sweeps for any remaining Al-Shabaab fighters who participated in the assault. The situation as of now is reported to be stable, with no further clashes reported.

This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, where government forces, often supported by international allies, continue to engage with Al-Shabaab in efforts to secure territories and dismantle the insurgent network.
