NAIROBI, Kenya — Presidents Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia and William Ruto of Kenya concluded their summit at the State House in Nairobi on October 23, 2024, with a joint commitment to deepen bilateral ties, focusing on security, trade, and regional stability.

In a joint statement, both leaders underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in combating the persistent threats from Al-Shabaab, emphasizing that security in Somalia directly impacts regional peace. They discussed the transition plans post-ATMIS, indicating ongoing dialogue on how Somalia will manage its security apparatus after the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) phases out.

Presidents Mohamud and Ruto also highlighted advancements in economic cooperation, with recent agreements aimed at enhancing trade and investment between the two nations. These agreements, signed earlier this year, pave the way for more structured political consultations, educational exchanges, and defense cooperation.

“Today’s discussions were fruitful, reinforcing our shared vision for a secure and prosperous East Africa,” President Ruto stated. President Mohamud added, “The path to lasting peace in Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa requires the kind of strategic partnership we are fostering with Kenya.”

The meeting also touched upon broader regional issues, with both leaders expressing their intent to work closely with other regional blocs like the East African Community and the African Union to tackle common challenges, including maritime security and counter-terrorism.

The joint statement concluded with an invitation for further high-level engagements, suggesting that President Ruto might visit Mogadishu in the near future to continue these dialogues on Somali soil, symbolizing the strength of the bilateral relationship.

This summit not only underscores the strategic partnership between Kenya and Somalia but also reflects a broader regional approach towards stability and economic growth, amidst ongoing security challenges.
