PARIS — The State Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ali Mohamed Omar, was officially welcomed by Mr. Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, France’s State Minister for Francophonie and International Partnerships, during a significant meeting in Paris aimed at bolstering the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

The discussions focused on advancing Somalia’s sovereignty, stability, and prosperity, exploring new avenues for collaboration in areas like Security and Stability, Diaspora and Migration, Economic Cooperation, Diplomatic Relations, and future commitments.

France congratulated Somalia on its recent election to the United Nations Security Council, with Mohamed-Soilihi emphasizing a desire for close collaboration during Somalia’s tenure to tackle global challenges.

Key points of the meeting included France’s reaffirmation of support for Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts and maritime security, alongside discussions on the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the new African Union Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Migration issues, particularly the tragic incidents off Madagascar’s coast, were addressed, leading to a proposal for an administrative agreement to enhance cooperation on migration management and combat human trafficking.

Economic discussions highlighted Somalia’s potential for foreign investment, with specific interests in infrastructure, fisheries, and hydrocarbons. Historical collaborations, like those with Total, were revisited, with plans to invigorate these partnerships.

France indicated interest in reopening its embassy in Mogadishu to deepen ties, a move welcomed by Somalia, which seeks to enhance engagement with French enterprises.

Both ministers underscored Somalia’s role in regional peace, pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation and expedite mutual opportunities.

“This meeting underscores the strength of our partnership and our shared vision for a stable and prosperous Somalia,” stated Mohamed-Soilihi. Ali Omar echoed, “We are confident that today’s dialogue will pave the way for a new chapter in Somalia-France relations, fostering greater collaboration for the benefit of both nations.”
