Kenyan Troops Withdraw from Key Positions Near Somalia Border

AFMADOW, Somalia — Kenyan military units have retreated from strategic positions along the Somalia-Kenya border, near the Afmadow district in Somalia’s Lower Jubba region, according to Shabelle Radio sources.

The troops have reportedly returned to the Kiunga area, located approximately 10 kilometers from the border.

The Badamadow region, known for its volatility, has been a significant stronghold for the Al-Shabaab militant group and is also thought to host foreign fighters combating the insurgents. The withdrawal comes after years of joint operations between Kenyan and Jubaland forces which had previously helped control Al-Shabaab activities in the area.

The presence of U.S. forces in the nearby Manda Bay area of Lamu County, Kenya, has been instrumental in border security, particularly around Badamadow. American troops have provided specialized training, technical assistance, and intelligence support, including drone operations, to counter the militant threat.

This move by Kenyan forces may impact the security dynamics in this region, which has been a focal point in the fight against Al-Shabaab. The strategic implications of the withdrawal are yet to be fully assessed.
