CAIRO – Egypt Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh reaffirmed supporting Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as a necessity for maintaining security and stability in the Horn of Africa.
This came during a phone call to discuss enhancing cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, and commercial fields, and consulting on regional issues, read a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday
The call, which comes as part of the trilateral coordination between Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia on regional issues, builds on the inauguration of a new phase of bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly nations, read the ministry’s statement.
Egypt and Eritrea have repeatedly rejected all foreign interference in Somalian affairs and declared their support for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In August, Cairo and Mogadishu signed a military cooperation protocol between the two countries.
During his visit to Eritrea in October, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki, and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud agreed on the importance of cooperation among the coastal states of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to maintain security along the vital maritime corridor.
“Our three countries, our region, and our shores at the southern and northern entrances of the Red Sea are rich in resources and offer promising opportunities for development and growth,” El-Sisi stated in a press conference after the summit.
On the other side, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki recently visited Egypt to discuss boosting cooperation between the two countries with President El-Sisi.
