MOGADISHU [SMN] – Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed delivered a landmark speech to hundreds of youth who recently joined his political party. During his address, Sheikh Sharif focused on the country’s security situation and the disarmament plans being implemented by the Federal Government of Somalia.

Sheikh Sharif expressed concerns over the country’s fragile security, stating that the government cannot guarantee the safety of opposition politicians.

“The safety of opposition politicians remains uncertain, which highlights the need for a democratic system that is inclusive of all parties,” he said.

“We Will Not Lay Down Arms Until Peace Is Achieved”

The former leader of Somalia’s transitional government emphasized that opposition leaders would not disarm, citing the need to protect themselves and their political activities.

“Arms are the only means of self-defense we have until genuine peace is established,” he said, warning against any attempt by the government to use force to suppress the opposition.

“One-Person, One-Vote Elections Are Unrealistic”

Sheikh Sharif also criticized the government’s push for a one-person, one-vote electoral process, describing it as an unachievable plan that lacks consensus and does not serve the Somali people.

Opposition Mobilizing Against Government Plans

Sheikh Sharif, along with other opposition leaders, has been leading efforts in Mogadishu to rally against the government’s electoral plans. The opposition accuses the administration of pursuing a biased agenda that favors President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, calling for the establishment of an inclusive framework based on national consensus.

A Call for Fair Governance

In his closing remarks, Sheikh Sharif underlined the opposition’s commitment to advocating for transparent and inclusive governance in Somalia.

“We want a government that belongs to the people and is rooted in justice,” he stated.

Rising Political Tensions

The political climate in Somalia is growing increasingly tense as both the government and opposition intensify their campaigns. The coming months are expected to reveal whether these opposing forces can reach a compromise or if the divisions will deepen further.
