MOGADISHU, Somalia – The Chairman of the National Election and Boundaries Commission, Cabdikariim Ahmed Hassan, met with Karin Johansson, the European Union Ambassador to Somalia, to discuss the electoral system and the Commission’s plans for upcoming public elections.
Abdi Kariim emphasized that the Commission is working to facilitate free, fair, and credible elections at all levels of government. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the Somali people have the opportunity to choose their leaders freely and in accordance with the Constitution.
The meeting was significant, focusing on ensuring that Somalia’s electoral system is transparent and trustworthy.
Abdi Kariim also addressed the possibility of holding local and national elections in Somalia, including the upcoming local elections scheduled for June 2025. These elections will take place in cities such as Mogadishu, Hirshabelle, Galmudug, South West, and SSC-Khamuto regions.
However, the Puntland and Jubaland administrations have yet to finalize their plans for the local elections in their regions. Despite these challenges, the Chairman affirmed that elections will occur in the Gedo district as planned.
The new election body said Somalia is on the path to holding the first universal suffrage elections in more than five decades amid political crisis among the FGS and Federal States.
