MOGADISHU, Feb 22, 2025 – Somalia’s Federal Parliament opens its 6th session on Saturday after a prolonged break, with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud due to address lawmakers on the nation’s domestic and international standing, officials said.
In his speech, Mohamud is expected to outline key priorities for the coming months, including preparations for upcoming elections, and deliver a detailed assessment of Somalia’s political and security situation.
The session comes as political friction intensifies, following reports of a motion to remove Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
Ahead of the opening, the president met with several MPs to discuss the proposal, which is said to have been drafted by a faction of lawmakers and has ignited fierce debate across Somalia’s fractious political scene.
With parliament back in session, legislators are set to present their agendas, spotlighting critical issues and their aspirations for the country. The mounting tensions over Barre’s leadership and the looming elections signal a critical juncture for the government.
Lingering disagreements over the electoral process, especially with regional leaders, remain unresolved, with no consensus yet on a formal voting system.
