Somali Parliament Session Ends in Chaos Over MP’s Immunity Removal

Mogadishu, April 19, 2025 (SMN) – A heated session of Somalia’s House of the People ended in chaos on Saturday after Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Adan Madobe) tabled a controversial motion concerning the dismissal of MP Abdullahi Hashi Abib.

The session erupted into shouting and disorder as opposition lawmakers, angered by the earlier removal of Abib’s parliamentary immunity, disrupted proceedings. Several MPs broke parliamentary microphones in protest, Shabelle TV’s reporter said.

Unable to restore order, Speaker Madobe abruptly adjourned the session, declaring the sitting closed amid the uproar.

MP Saddam Mahmoud Abdi accused the Speaker of violating parliamentary procedures, claiming his actions amounted to a breach of the House’s internal rules.

“Speaker Madobe has failed in his duties and overstepped his mandate,” said Saddam. “We are now working on a motion to remove him from office.”

Opposition MPs, who led the disruption, have condemned the move to strip Abib of his immunity, calling it politically motivated and unlawful. They argue the decision contravenes parliamentary rules and was taken due to personal or political interests after Abib repeatedly failed to attend sessions.

Speaker Madobe, who is a close ally to President Hassan Sheikh, has defended his decision, insisting that the MP had violated the rules governing the conduct of the legislature.

The incident underscores mounting tensions within Somalia’s legislature amid growing political divisions in the Horn of Africa, which is heading to the polling stations in 2026.
