BAGHDAD, May 17 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Friday called for the creation of an independent Palestinian state and welcomed the lifting of international sanctions on Syria, speaking at the 34th Arab League summit in the Iraqi capital.
“Colonialism must come to an end, and an independent Palestinian state must be established,” Mohamud told leaders gathered in Baghdad, voicing Somalia’s firm support for Palestinian statehood amid rising tensions in the region.
The president also expressed solidarity with Syria, praising recent moves to ease punitive measures against Damascus. “We welcome the lifting of sanctions on Syria,” he said, in a message that aligns with a broader push among some Arab states for regional reintegration of the war-torn country.
Mohamud’s remarks come as Arab leaders seek a unified stance on longstanding regional issues, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Syria’s return to the diplomatic fold following years of isolation.
