MOGADISHU, May 22 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the Ministry of Defence on Thursday to assess the performance of key state institutions charged with safeguarding national security amid ongoing efforts to stabilize the country.

During the visit, President Hassan received a comprehensive briefing from Defence Minister Ahmed Mo’alim Fiqi and Chief of Defence Forces General Odawaa Yusuf Rageh. The briefing addressed the current security landscape, institutional reforms, and strategic plans aimed at strengthening the Somali Armed Forces.

Officials highlighted recent advances in the government’s counterterrorism campaign, citing a series of successful operations carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) and Ma’awisley forces, with logistical and tactical support from international partners. Notable progress was reported in regions such as Hiran, where these forces have made significant territorial gains against extremist groups.

President Hassan reiterated the government’s commitment to deepening military reforms, boosting operational capabilities, and fostering sustainable peace and security. “Our priority remains to protect the sovereignty of Somalia and ensure stability for all citizens,” he said, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration with international allies.

Somalia has been grappling with the insurgency of Al-Shabaab militants for over a decade, with periodic surges in violence disrupting efforts at state-building and national reconciliation. The government’s renewed focus on security comes as it prepares for forthcoming elections and faces increasing political pressures.

The visit underscores President Hassan’s broader strategy to consolidate state institutions and project strength amid a complex security environment that threatens Somalia’s fragile progress.
