NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official statement clarifying its position on bilateral relations with Somalia.
The statement emphasized Kenya’s full support for Somalia’s independence, territorial integrity, and national unity. It affirmed that the Federal Government of Somalia, based in Mogadishu, is the sole legitimate authority responsible for Somali affairs.
Kenya reiterated its commitment to the principles of the United Nations, the African Union Charter, and its own foreign policy, all of which stress non-interference in the internal matters of other states.
Highlighting the longstanding historical, cultural, and kinship ties between the two countries, the statement noted their shared aspirations for peace, security, and sustainable development.
Kenya also pledged continued support for Somalia’s state-building and development efforts, emphasizing neighborly cooperation and partnership. It further affirmed its intention to maintain strong relations with the Jubaland and Somaliland administrations to enhance security and trade cooperation.
The release comes as Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro visits Kenya. Kenya maintains a diplomatic office in Hargeisa, while Somaliland has an office it refers to as an embassy in Nairobi.
