Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) attended the 8th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR 2025), a four-year summit held in Geneva, Switzerland.
SoDMA Chief Mohamud Moalim led Somalia’s delegation to the summit in Geneva, held from June 2 to 6, with over 2,700 participants from 133 countries.
Delegates addressed global strategies for disaster preparedness, resilience building, and risk reduction, with a strong emphasis on public awareness and early warning systems.
Organized by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the event promoted international cooperation and leadership in facing escalating disaster threats worldwide.
Participants shared their experiences and how countries are improving disaster management, emergency response and reducing risks in affected areas.
Moalim outlined Somalia’s progress in disaster readiness and his government’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and infrastructure.
He said, “Better early warning systems, stronger institutions, and more community involvement are key parts of Somalia’s disaster risk plan.”
The summit concluded with a joint call to fast-track implementation of the Sendai Framework, urging nations to meet its 2030 disaster risk reduction targets.
The Sendai Framework calls on countries to boost resilience, improve recovery plans, and build systems to handle future emergencies and climate risks.
