Addis Ababa — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has reiterated that Ethiopia cannot remain a landlocked country, emphasizing that the nation’s economy heavily depends on securing access to the sea.

Speaking in recent remarks, Abiy stressed that the lack of a sea outlet places a significant burden on Ethiopia’s economy and called for the urgent resolution of the issue. He affirmed that Ethiopia is pursuing its maritime access rights through legal and peaceful means.

“Our country cannot be without access to the sea; our economy relies on it. It is crucial that neighboring countries understand the importance and legitimacy of this matter,” the prime minister said.

Abiy also highlighted that Ethiopia’s peace and development will contribute positively to the wider region’s progress, urging all parties to work in good faith toward a lasting solution on maritime access.

The prime minister expressed confidence that Ethiopia’s quest for sea access will conclude with an international agreement based on commercial and legal frameworks.
