Kismayo, Somalia – Lawmakers in Somalia’s Jubaland state are expected in the coming days to approve a new second vice president, following the death of Suldaan Abdulkadir Luga Dheere, who previously held the position.

President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, also known as Ahmed Madobe, is set to nominate a successor, after which the regional parliament will vote to confirm the appointment in accordance with the state’s constitutional procedures.

Suldaan Luga Dheere passed away recently in Kenya and was laid to rest in the southern port city of Kismayo, the administrative capital of Jubaland. His death triggered an official mourning period, including a public condolence gathering that is expected to conclude soon.

“Once the mourning period ends, the president will put forward a nominee, and parliament will proceed with the confirmation process,” a senior Jubaland official told Radio Shabelle on condition of anonymity.

According to Jubaland’s governing system, the president nominates vice presidents, who must then be approved by the regional assembly to formally assume office.

Sources within the Jubaland administration confirmed that preparations for the appointment are underway, and that lawmakers are likely to vote on the new second vice president shortly after the formal nomination.

Suldaan Luga Dheere was a prominent figure in Jubaland’s leadership and his passing was widely mourned by both government officials and the public.
