The Horn of Africa will experience contrasting weather patterns from August through October, with some regions receiving heavy rainfall and others remaining dry, the Climate Prediction and Applications Center (ICPAC) of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an East African bloc, said on Tuesday.
ICPAC said in its latest forecast that heavier-than-usual rains will be experienced in western Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. On the other hand, drier-than-usual conditions are expected in northwestern South Sudan, southeastern Ethiopia, and parts of Somalia and Kenya.
ICPAC noted that the region will also experience two temperature conditions, with some countries registering over 32 degrees Celsius and others remaining cooler than usual.
“The seasonal temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual over northern Sudan and equatorial to southern parts of the region,” ICPAC said.
Cooler-than-normal conditions are expected in western Eritrea, southern South Sudan, northern Somalia, western and northeastern Uganda, and northwestern Kenya, among other regions, said ICPAC.
The Horn of Africa is experiencing climate extremes that have impacted agriculture and livelihoods, pushing many into poverty, according to ICPAC.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations noted that over 82 million people are currently food insecure in East and Central Africa due to conflict and climate shocks.
