MOGADISHU, Aug 10, 2025 – A planned meeting between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and leaders of the National Salvation Forum was postponed once again on Sunday, as tensions deepened over controversial constitutional amendments, sources told Shabelle Media.
Key participants in the talks confirmed the postponement, adding that the parties have agreed to reconvene on Wednesday.
The delay comes amid a growing dispute over Chapter 4 of the Provisional Constitution, which outlines critical aspects of the country’s governance structure.
According to sources close to the negotiations, President Mohamud has reportedly backtracked on a previous agreement to amend certain provisions in Chapter 4 — a move that has sparked frustration among opposition leaders.
The National Salvation Forum leaders have urged the president to honor his earlier commitment and refrain from unilaterally reversing changes that had been tentatively agreed upon.
“The president’s insistence on retaining the contested clauses undermines trust and threatens the progress made so far,” a source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said.
The stalled talks are part of broader efforts to resolve long-standing political disagreements and finalize Somalia’s provisional constitution, which has remained incomplete for over a decade.
No official statement has been released from Villa Somalia regarding the postponement.
