MOGADISHU, August 12, 2025 – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday extended his condolences to the families of those killed in recent deadly clashes in the Gedo region, and urged government troops who crossed into neighboring Kenya to return to their positions within Somali territory.

In a statement from the presidency, Mohamud called for calm following renewed fighting between federal forces and troops loyal to the Jubbaland regional administration, which left multiple soldiers dead, including a senior Jubbaland police commander.

“The President expresses his heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their loved ones in the conflict,” the statement read. He assured that no punitive action would be taken against the troops who crossed the border, promising their safety and security upon return.

“There will be no reprisals. I urge all Somali troops currently across the border to come back to their positions. Their well-being and protection are guaranteed,” Mohamud said.

The President also instructed the Federal Government of Somalia to deliver urgent medical and humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by the violence in Gedo, emphasizing the state’s responsibility to protect and support its people.

The clashes highlight ongoing tensions between Mogadishu and the semi-autonomous Jubbaland administration over control of the strategically vital Gedo region, near the Kenyan border.

Mohamud called for an immediate end to hostilities and urged all parties to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than armed confrontation.
