Pressure Mounts on Somali PM as No-Confidence Motion Gains Momentum

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A growing number of Somali lawmakers have thrown their weight behind a no-confidence motion targeting Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, accusing his administration of failing to address key national priorities, including security, governance, and federalism.

Parliamentary sources revealed that more than 100 members of the House of the People have so far signed the motion, signaling a serious challenge to the embattled prime minister’s leadership.

“The government has lost the confidence of the people. It has failed to deliver on its promises, and it is time for new leadership,” one MP supporting the motion told Radio Shabelle on condition of anonymity.

Critics of the prime minister argue that his administration has struggled to contain security threats posed by Al-Shabaab, mismanaged relations with federal member states, and stalled crucial reforms needed to stabilize the country’s fragile institutions.

While Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has not publicly responded to the mounting pressure, officials close to his office dismissed the motion as a politically motivated attempt to derail government progress.

“This is not about performance; it is about power struggles. The prime minister remains committed to serving the Somali people,” a senior aide said.

If the motion proceeds to a parliamentary vote, it could result in the dismissal of Barre’s government — a move that would deepen Somalia’s ongoing political uncertainty and potentially stall planned reforms.

The motion comes amid broader tensions within the federal government and between Mogadishu and regional states, as Somalia continues to grapple with security challenges, political fragmentation, and humanitarian crises.
