Somali minister in Norway to boost cooperation on social development, human rights

Oslo – Somalia’s Minister of Family Affairs and Human Rights, Amb. Khadiija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, has held high-level talks in Oslo with senior Norwegian officials to strengthen bilateral cooperation on social welfare, child protection, and women’s rights.

 

During her working visit to Norway, Minister Al-Makhzoumi met with Kjetil Vevle, Secretary of Labour and Social Affairs in the Norwegian government.

Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between the two countries in social protection, particularly support services for children, persons with disabilities, and women.

The Somali delegation included the Ministry’s Director General, Mohamed Bashir Omar, and Abdullahi Mohamed Alas, a Somali-Norwegian elected member of the local council in Norway.

In a separate meeting, the delegation also held talks with Kristin Hagstad, Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The meeting centered on expanding development projects related to children’s welfare and women’s empowerment in Somalia.

Minister Al-Makhzoumi emphasized the importance of strengthening long-term partnerships with Norway to promote inclusive social development and the protection of human rights in Somalia.

The Somali delegation is expected to hold further meetings with various government institutions and international organizations based in Norway during the remainder of their visit.
