Mogadishu, Somalia – Somalia’s federal cabinet on Thursday approved three military cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening the country’s armed forces, the government said.
The deals, endorsed during the weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, involve the ministries of defence of Jordan, Qatar, and Pakistan.
“These agreements form part of ongoing efforts to enhance national defence capabilities and boost international military cooperation,” a government statement said.
The meeting also reviewed the country’s overall security situation and ongoing military operations against the militant groups Al-Shabaab and Islamic State-linked fighters.
Somalia has been battling an insurgency for more than a decade, and the government is increasingly seeking foreign support to rebuild its security forces as African Union troops continue a gradual withdrawal from the country.
