Las Anod, Somalia (AFP) – The newly elected president of Somalia’s Northeastern Federal State, Abdulqadir Firdhiye, has called on residents to respect the rule of law following recent unrest in the city of Las Anod, the administrative capital of the region.

The appeal follows a wave of armed violence that shook the city in recent days, culminating in the arrest of businessman – Jabutawi. Local officials allege he has ties to an armed group believed to be behind the latest bout of instability.

In a public address, President Firdhiye urged citizens to cooperate with state authorities and remain committed to law and order.

“If we do not abide by the law and uphold the system of governance, the existence of a functioning state becomes impossible,” said Firdhiye.

The president’s remarks come shortly after the Northeastern State formally joined Somalia’s federal framework. Firdhiye’s administration was ushered in through recent elections viewed as a significant step toward political integration.

He pledged to prioritize security, disarm illegal armed groups, and restore stability in Las Anod and the wider region.

Security forces continue operations in the city as investigations into the unrest remain ongoing.

Calm is slowly returning to the streets, though authorities warn that the situation remains fragile, according to the locals, who spoke to Shabelle Radio over the phone from Las Anod.
